How To Avoid Deer Vehicle Collisions - Steps to take to keep safe
Get the Flash Player to see this player.
In addition, there are a number of myths associated with deer-car crashes that Allstate, in partnership with a number of states across the nation, are sharing with drivers to remind them to be on watch for Whitetails.
MYTH #1: Always swerve to avoid hitting a deer.
Actually, police statistics show that most motorist deaths and injuries occur when drivers swerve to avoid hitting the deer and strike a fixed object, such as a tree or another vehicle. It may seem powerless, but simply applying your brakes while you're buckled up, gripping the steering wheel with both hands, and coming to a controlled stop (if possible) can actually help minimize damage and injuries.
MYTH #2: Motorcyclists are not as likely to strike a deer.
In fact, motorcyclists are more vulnerable to death or injury in motorcycle-deer crashes. More than 80 percent of all motorcycle-deer crashes involve an injury.
MYTH #3: Deer are usually out at dusk.
In addition to dusk, you should watch for deer during their prime feeding times; especially at dawn and the first few hours of darkness. *********
Myth #4 - Hunting reduce Deer Vehicle Accident
ABSOLUTELY NOT in fact hunting makes deer vehicle accident worse (see last portion below and link)
Here are some other tips Allstate recommends:
-- Be especially cautious when driving on two-lane roads and rural roads.
-- If you see one deer cross, slow down and watch for others to follow.
-- Glance continually from the road to the roadside, looking for movement where roads are bordered by fields or natural habitat.
-- Heed deer crossing signs and reduce speed in deer "hot spots."
-- At night, watch for reflection from headlights in the eyes of deer.
-- If a deer "freezes" in your headlights, turn your lights off and then on.

WHY DVA ARE HIGHEST DURING OCT-DEC AND WHY HUNTING IS THE CAUSE OF DVA?
"Deer are out and about in the region. Driven by hunters, they're darting out onto roads, possibly in the path of your car."
"Another reason more accidents occur in fall is because the deer are moving - deer season is beginning. If you were being shot at, you'd run too," Call said.

Human Fatality in DVA is Murder One
"Over 1.5 million deer/vehicle crashes occur per year in the U.S., causing over $1.1 billion in vehicle damage, more than 29,000 human injuries and 150 deaths." Statistics may be boring, but they are consistent. It dictates that given 30 million deer roaming across the land, and given 3-trillion vehicle-miles per year on American highways, and, not least of all, given a hunting reason entertaining 1.5 million hunters in Pennsylvania alone, and 15 million across the land, which causes deer to blindly dash out of forests into the path of speeding vehicles in evasion of the lethal human intruders the hunters, there WILL be about 1.5 million deer-vehicle collisions (DVCs) or deer-vehicle accidents (DVAs), which WILL cost about 1.5 million deer lives and about 150 human lives, plus about 30,000 human injuries. According to hunting sources, there were originally about 30 million white-tailed deer in America.

Rut is part of nature but hunting is not. Because of hunting we have more deer thus more buck (rut) for hunters recreational purpose. Why is it that states with high DVA's such as W. Va and PA Game and Fisheries website they talk about "producing deer" for hunters? Here are couple of things I have learned which other anti-hunters have talked about it for a long time and if you really take time and visited some of these website you will see their intention is deer production that is why they fear the IC deer birth control like the plague..
If you go to my blogger its loaded with information I have gathered.

let me guess. You aren't from around here? You're Murder One stat that claims deer run in front of cars to avoid the "lethal human intruders" is so pathetic as to be ridiculous. The only good thing is that when a rational person reads your blog you immediately loses all credibility.
Why don't you watch my other uploads and read the links because even your people claim that hunters in the woods spook the deer out of the forest into oncoming cars.
The statistics are there, the hunters chase the deer into the roads, I have witnessed this myself!!
Thank you dominique, its quiet obvious that hunters in the woods will spook the deer out of the forest, there is no doubt it. Not only the fact of them trampling of the forest but when the animals gets hit the other deer beside the shot deer will run especially when it comes to the bowshot deer for they do not drop right away instead they run with the arrow in their body which is a horrible death. .
Caroline TC, thank you for the informative article. But I don't think contraception involves enough suffering to satisfy Kirk Uhler. He won't be happy without inflicting the greatest amount of suffering and distress possible (bowhunting). Killing does that may be nursing fawns just adds to the horrific suffering. If contraception is the only alternative left for Uhler, he will abandon the effort entirely. After all, I guess the auto-deer collision problem isn't THAT bad. Contraception is not on his "agenda".
It's hard to not laugh at anyone who thinks hunters don't spook deer. Caroline TC's facts are right on. Deer WILL bolt at the sound of a gun shot, an arrow whizzing by, after being wounded, or by many other factors. Deer won’t stop to let traffic pass before crossing roads if they are in fear flight.
So hunting may be as big a cause of deer-auto collisions as is unsafe speed—when speed is too fast for conditions. If you can’t stop, your speed is unsafe. When in deer habitat, drivers must slow down. No matter how many deer are killed, a special deer hunt has no bearing as to when the next deer will cross a road.
We make drivers slow to 25 mph in school zones when children are present. Using the same logic, let’s lower speed limits to 25 mph on any roads in deer habitat.
This will spook out the real reason for Kirk Uhler’s crazy proposal: His campaign contributing buddies want their kids to bait and shoot off their back porches in rural residential areas of Loomis and Granite Bay.
Here's the response from Uhler's office to a letter a friend wrote. All I can say is at least she received a response, I'm still waiting for word from "The Emperor of Granite Bay".
---------------------------------------------
I am in receipt of your email regarding potential deer hunts in Granite bay. As is often the case with these types of things, grossly inaccurate information has been spreading around and apologize if you have received such. Supervisor Uhler has asked the County Fish and Game commission to review options to help protect drivers from the huge increase in deer as well as thin the heard moving in the area per California Fish and Game Departments concern that the herd is getting to populated and may start spreading disease. A youth bow hunt for up to twenty-five deer is one of the options being proposed for recommendation by the state fish and game department. Hunting in Granite Bay is already allowed during normal hunting season, this proposal was to add an extra twenty-five tags in the Granite Bay area for a youth bow hunt earlier in the season. This is only a suggestion from the California Fish & Game department at this time.
Should you be interested in learning the accurate information in detail, there will be a meeting and presentation on this topic tonight at the Fish & Game Commission Meeting in the Planning Commission chambers at 11477 E AVENUE Auburn in the Placer County DeWitt center.
-------------------------------------
So let's see "as is often the case....grossly inaccurate information has been spreading around". Is he talking about the deer hunt or the solar power deal? Could be either because in both issues he's back-peddled. Seems we always have it wrong. It goes on to say, "Uhler asked the F&G commission to review options....." The ONLY option I've heard thus far is the annihilation of 20 does - end of story. Where is the list of OPTIONS? How about enforcing speed limits on Auburn Folsom before a child crossing the street is mowed down. The residents and business owners along that road will tell you the speed limit is non-existent. But let's not stop here, Uhler's office then points to the Cal F&G department saying THEY have 'concern that the herd is getting to populated and may start spreading disease". The Cal F&G biologist said 1. the herd is declining (a comment made by another Cal. F&G employee in November, so Uhler's office should have already known this when the letter was written) and this problem seems to be the inability for humans to co-exist with deer. The biologist specifically mentioned "depredation and orchard" issues. This issue has nothing to do with too many deer, but more an intolerance of any deer.
2. The biologist also said herd health is good and CWD isn't a problem. But the finger pointing doesn't end there. Uhler's letter says the youth bow hunt was the recommendation by the state F&G department. What? I've never heard the state F&G department many ANY recommendations other than to conduct a study to determine what the issues are and what solutions are best. In fact, the state biologist said killing 20-25 does would do nothing, nada, zip to manage any problems. He went on to say the only thing it would accomplish is to increase hunting opportunities for the kids so they didn't have to compete with experienced hunters for the permits. So it looks like Cal F&G isn't going to bail Uhler out. The Emperor of Granite Bay has again put his foot way deep in another pile of dodo.
To sum it up, the only "grossly inaccurate information" I'm hearing is coming from Uhler's office, and now he's pointing his finger to all these departments, yelling, 'they did it, they did it', that's typical. I heard his Granite Bay constituents have dubbed him the "flip-flop" man. Yes indeed, this is his interpretation of a Spin Class.
Great videos CarolineTC. I for one don't care if they are white tail, black tail, mule deer, rhino, gorillas or harp seals - the killing is abominable and gut wrenching, all in the name of "sports/trophy/recreational hunting". Thank you for advocating on their behalf.
The only thing Fish and Wildlife is "concerned" about it revenue from the deer killing license, not the lives of human from deer vehicle accidents and obviously not for the lives of any animals. With children bowhunting , we all wonder how many deer will be left wounded , crippled and left to die a suffering death , its too horrifying for me to even think. Its bad enough adult have to track wounded deer by using the blood trails, stains and gut matter , them can you imagine a child? Also a doe hunt may infact cause a vicious cycle of more killing because doe hunting actually may create more fawns and I wonder what the real intention of a "doe hunt" ? I have done a lot of reading into fish and wildlife type website or "buck management" "deer management" etc and you always see the word "produce", "provide" and what is with the "fawn recruitment", "fawn crops"? Seem that sometimes does need to be killed to have better "fawn recruits".

Here in NY we live in deer country and deer are everywhere even with hunting. I have told my roommate they should build a bigger and better sign such as billborad saying "welcome to ---- , please drive with caution because have plenty of deer" or even during the fall hunting season they should put a sign on the road "hunters are terrorizing the animal, please brace yourself for running deer" lol.
Seriously DVA are no laughing matter, I have to worry about my son who drives in NJ (he is 18) and I warn him during the fall season to be more alert for deer. He has many times encountered deer during the fall and winter season even the big buck deer and he said its a scary site and NJ Fish and Wildlife corruption that is why its hard to trust them and their intention killing animals. Killing is only temporarily for deer are always ready to be "restocked" for by each deer killing season for DNR need the antlered deer to sell the tags and with antler deer will come many rut deer during the fall, then add the hunters in the forest spooking the animals and a herd size created for hunting opportunities. So long as you have hunting for "deer management" you will have deer problems and deer vehicle accident. People are fooled because after the killing season people say "oh that pesty deer is gone" but little do they know there are back ups ready for the fall, and fawn birth becomes a plenty (all deliberate from the hunting organization). Hunting is a business for them, they need the deer abundance remember that so in actuality they lie to the public about "needing hunting to reduce population".
"I for one don't care if they are white tail, black tail, mule deer, rhino, gorillas or harp seals - the killing is abominable and gut wrenching, all in the name of "sports/trophy/recreational hunting". Thank you for advocating on their behalf."
Absolutely, and thank you as well for speaking out on the animals behalf!
Okay folks, here’s the truth, in written English that’s understandable. The only way you can prove that hunting the deer has increased the auto/deer collisions is to accumulate the numbers of collisions during deer season. Jim Cathers, you are really reaching here. Canis_Lupus you are as dishonest as a politician. You are one that is responsible for spreading the misinformation around. You just did it again. Uhler’s office never did “recommend” the hunt. Just as the letter stated, he asked the Fish and Game to “review options.” He hasn’t back peddled at all. If you were at the meeting you would have heard about the other options, for example, more deer crossing signs, a change in speed limits, etc. This is just more “dishonesty” from the anti-hunting extremists. When a Fish and Game Biologists says the herd in California is declining, that doesn’t mean it is declining in that specific area, Einstein. You’re lying again. The Biologist at the meeting said the health of our herd is LESS than good. Can you make one correct statement? The Biologist also said that eliminating 20 to 25 does MAY not do enough. He never said it was just another opportunity for kids to hunt. You are a liar! We know Caroline doesn’t even live here. That is probably true of Canis_Lupus, too. Go spread your lies in your own back yard.
Well, well, well, seems that website www.PlacerDeerHunt.com has a video of the biologist's presentation. He says "The amount or the intensity that this kind of hunt would be proposing, it wouldn't effect the population at all." Interesting, at the beginning of the video he says "..I don't want to say an overpopulation of deer because that may or may not be true. Apparently there may be too many deer to coincide peacefully with people." A very interesting statement. Who is the problem, the deer or people? Well since the deer can't advocate for themselves, let's tag them as being the problem and start firing away. I understand you were at that meeting. You were the one with the rose colored glasses on. Now what do you have to say about truth, dishonesty and lies?
Now, what difference does it make if Caroline lives here or east of here? Your statement that somehow her place of residence discredits her knowledge. It's like saying, abortion in California is different than abortion east of the Mississippi - it's really a dumb statement.
We do agree on one thing Patrick, politician's are dishonest, especially here in Placer :- Now you said it, I just agreed. But remember, Supervisor Uhler did start all of this and being the politician and all, well..... you can finish the thought.
Anyone "seriously" interested in this topic needs to visit that website.
Patrick, I hate to mention it but.... go to the video and toggle the locator bar to 3:15. The biologist says "...just simply a hunt like this, all it does is give a little bit more opportunity for people to go out and hunt". It's a good thing someone had the foresight to videotape the meeting in anticipation of those at the meeting spinning the details. Now I ask, who has been telling tall tales?
Every once in a while I can't help myself. I just have to comment. I went to the Fish & Game meeting, mostly because Uhler's involved and anything he's in ain't anything good. During public comments, there was a man that took the podium. He said he was a hunter. He proceeded to talk about a shooting match with his neighbor. The story went something like this, neighbor was firing his gun, podium man I think said something to neighbor but the shooting didn't stop so podium man everytime the neighbor started shooting his gun went out and shot his gun. Pretty funny story but I have a feeling Patrick50 is podium man. The mentality in these comments and podium man's solution to a personal (and potentially dangerous) problem seems to be the same - not very bright. I'll go back to lurking.
Canus_Lupus, You just proved yourself a liar. Let’s start with the first point. You said the Biologist said our herd health (the health of the deer) was good. He didn’t; he said it was less that good. Watch your video. As you stated, the Biologist said that there may be too many deer to coincide with the people in that area. When this happens, the deer lose. They are losing now by dying horrible deaths due to auto/deer collisions. Well, well, I just watched your fraudulent video and am turning it in to the legal department. This was the most cut up, fraudulent video I’ve seen in a great while, but what would you expect from anti-nuts. When Craig talked about the 25 tags not being sufficient, he was contrasting that to the 1955 doe hunt. His point is that eliminating just bucks was not sufficient for population control. We must take a number of does as well, as other states do. The 1955 doe hunt was prolific but not from a PR stand point. To all reasonable persons, please note all of the cuts in the video at strategic places. Get your own copy and see for yourselves. The video also shows Craig talking about creating opportunities for children to try hunting. He was referring to “youth hunts” in the past. He was not referring to this particular hunt. Youth hunts are a way to expose children to the hunting world.
Craig S. explained in detail how important it is to control our deer herds or they will die from disease and starvation. The video conveniently leaves all of this information out. Please all that are honest and reasonable get your own copy, and you will see how dishonest this organization is. As I have said before, if this hunt is deemed unnecessary or unsafe, most hunters are fine with that. I just will not stand for the anti-nuts coming in with their lies and half truths spreading misinformation. I will continue to expose them for the liars they are. BTW, I did not have “rose colored glasses.” I was at the meeting; I did speak at the end. I’ll be at the next meeting.
"Craig S. explained in detail how important it is to control our deer herds or they will die from disease and starvation. "
Isn't it strange how they continue to say deer will "die of starvation and diseases"? First of all CWD was first spread by the hunting communities because of the use of supplement feeding rendered animals to deer and elk for large antler growth and herd growth. Hunters could care less about "starving" deer and also according to Associated Press in 08 Wisconsin hunters did not recover 68,000 thousand wounded deer. Obviously its not isolated to just Wisconsin because hunters leave many animal wounded and crippled to suffer and die some with wounds so severe unable to eat only to starve to death all because certain group of human waste love to destroy animal for "sports".
http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x155/katvee/WICONSINWOUNDEDDEER.jpg
Also starvation is part of life and death in the wild but human are not, you kill way too many deer for "sports" and all does it continue to create more deer thus more killing and more deer, more killing etc etc etc. Deer Birth Control is here and it works according to the expert Jay Kirkpatrick Phd. but DNR and hunters rejects it and fear it like the plague because they need the large deer herd for recreational opportunities.
The truth is we care so much that we put our resources and time into their habitat. We humans ARE part of the wild. We always have been. Carolinetc, I, as well as others, have proven you wrong at every blog you have made. Perhaps DURING DEER SEASON, if the deer are near the road, they may run into to traffic. Deer season is very short. Jim Cathers do you know the number of auto/deer collisions during the deer season? If not then you’re talking out your butt, like all these extremist anti-hunters do. Hey, hunting is not going away. We’re still here; we’re still hunting.
. "Hey, hunting is not going away. We’re still here; we’re still hunting. "
I bet they said that about slavery "hey slavery is not going away, we are still here, we are still selling, trading and beating slaves" It was pure evil even though it was legal and finally it was abolished.
Only a Nut would attempt to draw that parallel, but you go ahead and hold your breath, Caroline.
slavery and deer. hmmm. Now you're starting to scare me. you have completely lost your mind. That is an insult to african americans you racist.

I live in MIddletown, New Jersey and my pet beagle was gored by a deer this last November. The antlers ripped my dogs stomach wide open, her pacreas were outside her stomach and her intestines were dragging on the ground. Obviously we had to put her to sleep, surgery was an option but would be massive and exploratory with no guarantees.

A University of California-Santa Cruz biologist’s home was firebombed this weekend by animal rights activists. An animal rights activist called the attack “necessary”, “just like those who fought against civil rights injustices.” The activist showed no remorse for the family or the children who were targeted. “To put this on par with any of the human rights issues is an absolute insult to the integrity of the people who fought and went through the human rights movement,” said Police, Capt. Steve Clark. “This is what people do when they have an inability to articulate their point in any constructive way. “They resort to primal acts of violence.” “Any “reasonable” person would need a logic transplant to begin to understand this level of degraded thinking.” How interesting that Carolinetc would refer to the civil rights issue, just as this criminal did. It is obvious that Carolinetc has the same line of “degraded thinking,” to have referred to slavery. Are you part of the ALF, Caroline? I think Capt. Steve Clark said it best.
It becomes too apparent how twisted the thinking of these radicals is.

Well, well, Caroline admits she’s part of the ALF family. The spokesperson from the ALF said “no one’s ever been killed in an ALF action. “Authorities say, however, that it is just a matter of time.” Chicago Tribune, August 4, 2008. “Just before 6 a.m. Saturday, molecular Biologist, David Feldhiem’s home was firebombed, forcing him, his wife and their two young children to flee down a fire escape. At the same time, a care belonging to a different, unidentified researcher was destroyed by another fire bomb. Police describe the explosives as a Molotov cocktail on steroids and said the attack on the Feldhiem’s home was being was being investigated as an attempted homicide because the family was at home.” Caroline uses the same excuses the ALF uses. How interesting that you think alike, you and the ALF. You even slip up when you say. No one’s ever been killed by the ALF, “how many on your side”? This clearly implies that your side is the ALF. No hunter has ever killed anyone in the name of hunting, zero. Your side, the ALF terrorists have attempted to kill people. You people all think alike. You’re dangerous to a civil society. The authorities say you’re dangerous. The FBI say you’re dangerous, and anyone with half a brain can read here for themselves how deranged your thinking is.
