Lewis & Clark Revisited on the Missouri River

Six of us canoed the upper Missouri River through Montana a few weeks ago, following the 1805 Route of Lewis & Clark. We camped where Lewis & Clark did, reading excerpts of their journals along the way. The view from the river has not changed much in 204 years, except we saw domestic cattle in place of buffalo and elk.

You can rent a canoe in Fort Benton Montana and float downstream for about 150 miles. The Canoe rental people will pick you up and bring you back to Fort Benton. It takes about a week, at 20 miles per day. Or you select a 105 mile segment, which took us 5 days.

gulliver,

Did you have to bring your own camping gear, or was it provided with the canoes?

I'd love to make that trip.

A few weeks back I was in Great Falls, MT on my way to Glacier National Park. I looked at the Missouri river and thought it was very inviting.

That looks like so much fun. Thanks for posting this. ;-)

gorgeous! i want to see them all!

gregcalac: We brought our own gear, but you can rent anything you don't have. The outfitter we used, who was very friendly and accomodating, lists his equipment and rental rates on this website: www.uppermissouri.com/index.htm.

gulliver,

Thanks for the info. I have all the gear I'd need, including canoe, but I was just wondering since I would love someone else to come along that might not have the right equipment.

Sounds like a fun trip, please show us some more pictures if you get a chance. Thanks Glenn
