Punk Rock Aerobics
Below you will find songs that can be listened to on youtube along with the exercises that go with it. Some of the exercises are based on punk rock shows of my own experience, some from what I feel should be done to the song, and some are how I listen to the songs.
Remember to go with it... it's Punk, you don't have to listen me.... or anyone else for that matter. If you're so inclined to do so... create your own moves to rock out to. Please let me know what you come up with.
1. Dropkick Murphys - Workers song: (Bring up the youtube with the lyrics so you can sing along. It's got a chantable chorus) One of my favorites. First thing is to jump up and down to the beat. If you feel like air-bagpiping... feel free. Next hold your fist out in the air and pound it to the beat while jumping up and down. Switch hands once in a while and don't forget to do sing the chorus... it'll help.
2. Bad Religion - American Jesus: Another classic. For this one you need to swing your elbows back and forth with your arms at a 45 degree angle, one at a time. Then kick out with the opposite leg. Every once in a while feel free to purse your lips and point your index finger at the "audience" like you're lettin 'em know they rock.
3. Sex Pistols - No Fun: If you're a die hard and the only exercise is lots of excercise... this one's for you (it's an eight miniute song). Pretend you're holding a microphone stand with one hand on it. Then make a terrible face, like you washed down a box of Sudafed with twelve cans of Mtn. Dew, and scream! Louder! I said scream! While you're screaming make sure to jump on the bed, run into the bathroom and scream, make use of any stairs you might have and be sure to go annoy any hapless family members that are too close to the action.
Whew!
Ok, break time: To power up for the next song go into an enclosed area and smoke cigarettes. After the first smoke chug a half pint of the cheapest liquor you can find. Do not throw it back up. If you throw it back up you will be made to drive to the store and get some more. Ok... eat some Cheez-It's, wash it down with another swig of Jagermeister and you're off...
4. The Misfits - Where Eagles Dare: This one will require the best air-everything you can muster. Air-drum to the first few seconds a then ease into a nice air-guitar. Good... you're doin' fine. During the chorus jump up and down, pointing at yourself and yell "I ain't no god**** son of a *****." Play it twice if the first one doesn't wear you out. (air-guitaring is much harder than it looks)
5. NOFX - Kill All The White Man: Lastly... cool down with a beautiful song from the islands. For this one you need only do that stoner shuffle that you see at Dead shows. It's basically a dance in place without moving more than necessary. That's it... cool down...you did great. At the end of the song, finish it with a front flip stage dive onto your bed.
Good job... you made it through your first Punk Rock Aerobics class. It wasn't so bad, was it?
So... tonight make sure to get plenty of Fun-Dip, Jello, beer, room temperature velveeta, cigs, and as much TV as you can. Remember... you're being punk so your kids wont have to....
Do it for the kids.

OK
thanks for the memories...reminds me of my many trips to Mabuhay Gardens and the Keystone Clubs in my late teens and early twenties...the sweat came out of every pore.
I used to hang out at 924 Glman in Berkeley and the Cattle Club in Sac..... ahh, glory days.
Oops... that should say "Gilman." Bad Religion '89 No control Tour, Gilman. Great show.
"run into the bathroom and scream" - so that's what you were doing in the bathroom and all this time I thought you were doing penance :-)
Some of us are just too old for this. How about some pogo-stick 80's synth rock hopping in place?
Humph! My punk rock aerobics would kick your 80's euro-synth workout right into next week... crying all the way.
Bastiat: Where are those clubs you mentioned? There not in the Bay area nor sacramento.
Fine then...come roller skating with us, I will kick your wimpy a** around the rink like an insane roller derby queen. ha
Fine, that's fine... I'll pull my now infamous Robot move all over the skating rink. Your sorry a** Macarena wont have a prayer.
Good song choices Birch, but I'm still not tired.
Maybe "Mommy's Little Monster" - Social D will do the trick.
Mommy's little monster... awesome. Great album. "I love the sound when I smash the glass... if I get caught there gonna kick my a**."
Try using a little Minor Threat "I'm seeing red" several times... that might help. :)
Oh, and to Gail... bring it sister.
Birch - I've seen Gail in action :-) You don't know what you're in for. OMG (sorry for the valley-girl abbr.), the visuals I get of Birch on the skating rink floor, pursed lips, as he intently points his finger at Gail, wearing supreme satisfaction on her face as if she had just been awarded The Nobel Peace Prize, whizzing by what is left of his sorely defeated machismo...
...Gail, please be kind (and don't forget to email me some pictures :-))
Thanks Bastiat! I haven't thought about the Mabuhay Gardens in years. To be 16 with a fake ID in SF during the 70's was living! We also would go to Finoccio's down the street...their drag cabaret show was always a good time!
Birch, Mabuhay was on Broadway in SF. I think they closed down in the 80's.
Cookie: Ok... that was a few years before my time. I started going to shows around '87. I usually went to, as I said, Gilman and the Cattle Club. I remember The Stone in SF... it closed in the early 90's. I used to go see The Cramps on Halloween at the Fillmore in SF.
Did you go see the Sex Pistols when they played their last show at Winterland in '78 while you were in the area in the 70's?
Observer: Pshaw!
As I recall the Mabuhay was in San Francisco and the Keystone in Berkeley. Did I get that right Basiat?
Never went my self but they used to advertise on my radio favorite station. I went to the Family Dog and the Filmore (both) but quit going to concerts before punk was around.
Family Dog... right on Voter. Not to date you but my Dad used to go to Family Dog events. Jeff. Airplane, Santana, the Dead, Credence, etc. Remember the Longshoreman's Hall?
Birch
Never made it out to the Longshoreman's Hall or Winterland. My favorite show at the Dog was was Quicksilver Messenger Service. The closest I got to punk was at the old Filmore for Iggy and the Stooges before he was calling himself Iggy Pop. He was OK but I liked the local warm up bands better, Commander Cody and Purple earthquake. Saw the Dead once and didn't like them I was the only person I knew that wasn't a Dead Head.
CA04 - you got it right...there used to be Keystones all over the Bay Area but I primarily went to the one in Berkeley. Cookie and CA04 both got Mabuhay location correct. SF clubs post hippy and pre AIDS were amazing fun.
Voter: Iggy and the Stooges are referred to as the first punk band. Also.... LSD helped with liking the Dead. :P
That was a long time before I heard the term punk for sure. I am thinking 1969 or 1970. I didn't miss much with the Dead. I would rather listen to Mowtown anyway. :)
gee whiz you guys are all so cool. when i was in my early 20's, i lived in Berkeley and rode my bike up Gilman every morning. We lived next door to a punk drummer who had a dog named Iggy. That's as close as I every got to being cool. On the weekends i went to Tilden park and rode the carousel for 50 cents. took top ramen in a thermos along with to save money - haha. thanks for stirring the memory pot.
Jayber
Tilden park is a great place. I spent a lot of time there as well.
Oh wow... right on, Jayber. Gilman was my home away from home. All the good bands used to play there.
I wasn't really into the punk scene, so no Sex Pistols shows. I think the allure of the Mabuhay was we could get in, drink, smoke, and laugh at the people "dancing".
I did spent plenty of days getting fried(by the sun) at Day on the Green shows at the coliseum.
My first concert was in 1976...my dad took me to see ELO at the Oakland Coliseum!
Day on the Green... forgotten about that. They should really bring it back. The last one I remember had Metallica playing sometime in the mid/late 80's.
I think after Bill Graham died, the Day on the Green shows just went away. Too bad because they were a great time!
Do you know about wolfgangsvault.com? If not, check it out.
wolfgangsvault.com? No, I'll check it out.
I think you will find wolfgangsvault is right up your alley, Birch. The story I heard a few years back is that a man was purchasing some of the Bill Graham Presents company from his widow. Part of the sale included, unknown to him at the time, a warehouse filled with concert memorabilia from the 60's, 70's, and 80's. Everything from posters and t-shirts, to recorded footage.
Right now I'm listening to the Sex Pistols at the Warfield on the site. Thank you! God save the queen!
Super! I had a feeling you would enjoy that website!
