Bighorn Sheep in the High Sierra

Mrs. Gulliver and I observed this small flock of bighorn sheep on the unnamed 11,200 ft pass that separates the Rae Lakes Basin from 60-lakes Basin. For those familiar with the John Muir Trail, this is in the vicinity of Glenn Pass in the Kings Canyon Wilderness. There are maybe 150 bighorn sheep left in the high Sierras.

Great pictures, thank you. Being a minimalist I laughed when I saw the picture of you with the lawn chair, I use a small three legged stool that maybe weights a pound but is not as comfortable. It's been a while since I've been in that area, it truly is a wonderful place.

Good hiking. Thanks again.

loomisresident: I have been carrying the same lawn chair for about 25 years. When I went out with my boys' scout troop (Troop 13 of Newcastle), my lawn chair was a source of great embarrassment to my sons. I have since found new and better ways to embarass my children.

Great photos of the bighorn sheep! My husband and I were recently fast packing the John Muir Trail - when we arrived at the summit of Pinchot Pass (the Pass just to the No. of Glen Pass), we observed a flock of 7 sheep (including a youngster), scaling up the rock, and finally arriving to the top, as we watched them in awe.....

lupinus: I'm thinking we saw the same flock. Although there are only 5 sheep in this photo, there was a sixth that was out of view when the photo was taken. There is one juvenile in this photo, just as you saw. Check out http://www.sierrabighorn.org/Pages/E-NewHerd.htm for an article that describes the bighorn population in the Glen Pass area as observed in the late 1990's and into 2001.

gulliver, I live to embarrass my kids. Have had a great deal of fun doing so over the years, I'm working on the grandkids now. My propeller beanie finally disintegrated much to the delight of my progeny and their offspring.

Thanks again for the pictures and the laugh.
