Taylor Creek Kokanee Festival, Weekend of October 3-4, '09
This is one of the most beautiful sights of Kokanee spawning in our area. It is a miraclous sight to behold. --Ishmael
Kokanee Salmon Festival includes underwater view Published Sunday, Sep. 27, 2009 in Sacbee
The 20th annual Kokanee Salmon Festival will take place next weekend at the U.S. Forest Service's Taylor Creek Visitor Center.
Events will start at 10 a.m. and continue until 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the center, off Highway 89 three miles north of the city of South Lake Tahoe.
The salmon began appearing in Taylor Creek Sept. 13, Rex Norman of the Forest Service's Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit said in a news release.
"No other species in Lake Tahoe offers such a spectacular show during their mating season," Norman said of the kokanee, landlocked cousins of the sea-going sockeye salmon. The species was introduced to Lake Tahoe in 1944 by biologists and quickly adapted, he said.
A below-the-surface view of the salmon's annual spawning run will be available in the center's stream profile chamber. Festival events will include wildlife programs, children's activities, educational booths, self-guided nature walks, marathons for all ages and a salmon barbecue.
Additional parking with shuttle service will be available at nearby Camp Richardson. For information, call the center, (530) 543-2674.

You know what, Jack? I might not agree with you on many political topics, but your efforts (and many others as well) to bring back the salmon to Auburn Ravine is something I can support.
If I'm in town I'll make a point of attending one of these dates. If not, I'll send SARSAS a check.
I hope this fundraiser is a huge success. ;-)
