Save Auburn Ravine and Steelhead raised $3000 during weekend events at Pescatore Winery in Newcastle
By peace
Dave Wegner of Pescatore Winery in Newcastle

Thanks to the tireless efforts of owners Dave and Patty Wegner of Newcastle's Pescatore Winery and the support of the nearly 100 people who purchased dinner and raffle tickets for the Nov. 6th and 7th events at Pescatore, $3000.00 for SARSAS projects was raised.

Other supporters who made these events a success were Auburn Save Mart and Auburn Grocery Outlet for wild salmon and tri-tip donations, Le Bilig Cafe, Katrina's Café of Auburn, and Newcastle Produce. Please visit these businesses and thank them for supporting SARSAS. Especially make a point of going to see Dave and Patty Wegner at Pescatore Winery on Ridge Road in Newcastle and sample some of their wonderful wines. SARSAS also thanks the Lincoln Rotary's sponsorship and Christine Kotcher, ceramic fish artist, for donating two fish and one half the money from her art sales at the events. Find out more about SARSAS projects and how you can help at www.sarsas.org. SARSAS is currently working with all the water agencies and local governments to install fish screens on the dozen diversions along Auburn Ravine.

SARSAS just completed an ambitious and very successful year and a half. We have made significant enough progress that there is a high likelihood of salmon and steelhead returning in numbers that will bring back a positive spawn in the Auburn Ravine. That's great news, but with success comes additional work. If we were a business we would be at that point where the business would now begin hiring employees in larger numbers. SARSAS is an all-volunteer organization; therefore, it is time for us to reach out and call for you to volunteer. Your skill, knowledge and motivation to work on behalf of salmon restoration will move SARSAS forward at a fast pace.

You may have lots of time to provide or you may have a very limited amount but all assistance is welcome and will be appreciated. We will work with you to find a way for you to make a valuable contribution to SARSAS. Here is a partial list of some needs we currently have:

1. clerical 2. computer skills 3. fisheries expertise 4. marketing skills 5.sales skills 6. engineering 7. expertise in stream bed and bank restoration 8. labor of all sorts 8.fund raising skills 9. grant writing skills 10. education expertise especially developing curriculum and lessons related to k-12 programs about salmon and restoration of salmon; 11. telephoning 12 artistic skills; 13. counting salmon. Have another idea? Let us know. Contact Jack Sanchez by email at jlsanchez39@gmail.com

I don't know, but in my thinking there is just something a little odd about buying a ticket to eat wild salmon to save wild salmon. I can't put my finger on it...it just seems a bit odd to me. AND, wild salmon from Save Mart. That too seems a little odd. It may all make perfect sense, it just rings a little weird to me.

Roland: Weird, did you use the word weird? That's my word today. ;-)

And you need someone to create lesson plans? Do the schools now need to add "salmon studies" to their already full plate (no pun intended)?

Gail, imitation is the greatest form of flattery :)

I wonder how they are going to spend the $3000.00.

Roland: OK. I am done calling things weird now. But to Scott if you read this, I need to also stop being so pun-ny: Reference the e-mail I just sent you. Sorry.

Yes, what does the $3000 get used for specifically? Fish screens?

Hi Gail and Jon,

Happy Thanksgiving. Our SARSAS budget is not used for any salaries. We are an all volunteer non-profit. Every donation goes to achieving the goal of returning anadramous fish to the Auburn Ravine. So far we have dispersed funds for school education programs and our own outreach material and we are working with the owners of the diversions and barriers to help them pay for construction of fish projects on their facilities. Once those projects are designed and permitted we will use the funds to pay for those projects. Our volunteer grant writer continues to write applications to fund fish screens and barrier passage projects. We are meeting regularly with the CABY IRWMP www.cabyregion.org and the Foothills Water Network www.foothillswaternetwork.org and a coalition of local watershed advocacy groups on a western Placer creeks watershed assessment that looks at all the factors effecting all the watersheds in our area, with a focus on anadramous fish populations. This study will be needed to qualify for some Federal, State and Private fish passage and screening grants.
