Psalm 109:8
President Obama, alive and well (Thank God)

Psalm 109:8, King James Version: ' Let his days be few; and let another take his office.

That's the so- called "Prayer for Obama" that's been circulating on the Internet and on bumper stickers and T-shirts recently. Sort of a Biblical shorthand for people wishing for a speedy end to the Obama presidency.

Here are the two verses that come after Psalm 109:8:

'Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow. Let his children be continually vagabonds, and beg: let them seek their bread also out of their desolate places.'

So before any of you Obama-haters out there decide to slap a Prayer for Obama bumper sticker on your car, just be sure you know what you're saying.

The folks using the Psalm in the above way are more incorrect than you may realize:

Psalm 109 - A lament notable for the length and vehemence of its prayer against evildoers (Psalm 109:6-20); the cry to God (Psalm 109:1) and the complaint (Psalm 109:22-25) are brief in comparison. The psalmist is apparently the victim of a slander campaign, potentially devastating in a society where reputation and honor are paramount. In the emotional perspective of the psalm, there are only two types of people: the wicked and their poor victims. The psalmist is a poor victim (Psalm 108:22, 31) and by that fact a friend of God and enemy of the wicked. The psalmist seeks vindication not on the basis of personal virtue but because of God's promise to protect the poor.

I would like to see a 1 Timothy 2:12 sign at a Sarah Palin rally.

1 timothy 2:12 is right down the alley of the Islamophiles who frequent this forum.

I would say it is more of a Christian thing, the quote being New Testament and all.

That curse is nothing new. I've had it on my Psalm Pilot for months.

I've always liked this verse: "Behold! This was the sin of your sister city, Sodom; pride, fullness of bread and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. (Ezekiel 16:49). So "sodomy" has nothing to do with sex, gay or straight. It's about selfishness and ignoring the poor.

JP: That's a real irony. Like most of the sexist, prudish or violent Bible quotes posted here, it seems to be much more strictly followed by Moslems. Go figure.

The footnotes in my Bible (The New American) says that women's conduct should reflect that of "helpmate" (the original design in Genesis) to her husband. It states that as long as women perform their role as wives & mothers, in faith and love, their salvation is assured. 1 Tim:2, 8-15.

I believe this, without a fault. It is not only Christain teaching, it is the basic concept in Islam and Bahai teaching. It is because my husband has been seeking God for many years, that he is the type of man I can submit myself unto. He treats me with all the tenderness, gentleness and guidance that he is supposed to and makes it easy to love him, to practice my faith, even with his shortcomings & my own. Marriage, in this setting, is not only for the material & spiritual (the most important) good of the entire family, but it also a means to salvation.

To interpret this in any other way, is in error, however...these scriptures are meant to instruct those who are seeking truth, seeking God...not meant to be trampled on by those who are not

I'm not an Obama fan and I haven't seen anything in the Internet or bumper stickers, anyway that is just sick, just as sick as those that wished Bush dead, and there were plenty of those.

We are still a free society and if we don't like someone we vote them out.

Bush was in no danger as long as he obeyed Cheney. Obama on the other hand is a target for racist and paranoid fringe elements.Make no mistake about it. The use of the Psalm is overtly threatening the life of our POTUS.

Sadly, there are many of the misguided evangelicals and other bible thumping freedom haters that take this kind of thing to the limit.

I agree with loomis and ChuxxR. I'm not in agreement with some of Obama's policies but I find the hysteria in his regard nauseating. I was no fan of Bush but I never once wished him dead. I will confess, however, to taking numerous shots at Cheney with my Nerf gun when he would come up on my tv set.

And THIS was broadcast by Glen Beck (19Nov2009):

"We are taking about massive, sweeping change. American's showed up by the hundreds of thousands at various tea parties to demand the opposite of this: stop spending money. But look at these bills. Look at this. This is a fundamental transformation of America...

Massive changes to the way you live your life...

Obama is trying to overwhelm the system right now with massive new government takeover programs. I mean look at these bills. This is just for health care. Stimulus. This is insanity.

We are talking here America about the end of our way of life.

This is not some wild conspiracy tale.

They already control our banks.

They control the auto industry.

Control the temperature inside of your home.

Control of one-sixth of the economy.

Taking over the internet in the name of neutrality.

If we don't stop this insanity now they will fundamentally transform America. It must end."

I fear someone unbalanced out there just might take Beck's sinister humor seriously.

On my previous post I said I had not seen any bumper stickers or received any emails. I have yet to see a bumper sticker but since my last post I have received five emails on the subject.

I only have one word to describe my opinion- SICK

In this country we vote, we don't kill heads of State. Yes it has happened before but it must never happen again.

I am totally againdt censorship but in this case things like this could incite some nutcase to act, I think this crosses the line.

Just my opinion.

Amen.

..on getting this complete idiot out of office as soon as possible. I hope no one takes a shot at this clod, regardless of how bad he is for the country.
