120 % of Americans Say Global Warming Scientists Lied?
By Skeptic

Is it fuzzy math or just inept mendacity? Sometimes I wonder if the folks at Rasmussen sit around thinking up ways to create pointless poll questions and then manufacture the answers just so Fox News can misinterpret them.

The latest Rasmussen poll on global warming is another example of why sober people don't take Rasmussen (or its never-ending supply of GOP-friendly polling results) seriously. Headline from Rasmussen: "Americans Skeptical of Science Behind Global Warming!"

It's an interesting headline, considering there's nothing from Rasmussen's own polling results to back up the claim. That's right, there is nothing in this poll to suggest "Americans" are skeptical about global warming science, especially since a plurality of respondents already told Rasmussen that they think global warming remains "a very serous problem."

Rasmussen never even asked "Americans" if they were "skeptical of the science behind global warming." No joke.

The Rasmussen headline makes the loud claim that Americans do not believe the SCIENCE behind global warming. But Rasmussen never asked Americans what they thought about the SCIENCE behind global warming. Rasmussen says:

"Most Americans (52%) believe that there continues to be significant disagreement within the scientific community over global warming." No, they don't.

If Rasmussen really wanted to know if Americans think lots of scientists don't believe in global warming, why didn't they just ask that question?

But they are Rasmussen, so they ask an ambiguous and different question in what seems to be a purposefully vague manner.

More from Rasmussen: "Even as Obama and senior members of Congress are pushing major anti-global warming initiatives, Americans overwhelmingly believe they should focus on the economy instead. Seventy-one percent (71%) say the bigger priority for U.S. national leaders is stimulating the economy to create jobs. Only 15% say they should focus instead on stopping global warming to save the environment."

Right. And exactly which "Senior Members of Congress" announced that stopping global warming takes precedence over creating new jobs? That's right. None. So, of course Rasmussen makes up a fake poll on it.

UPDATE: The percentage of American who (according to Rasmussen's own polls) think global warming is "a very serious problem" hasn't decreased in the last 20 months. Rasmussen ignores that. Instead, it makes up a phony claim that Americans are skeptical about the science behind global warming. Of course, Rasmussen bases this Cheshire Cat conclusion on a question Rasmussen never even asked.

Skeptic, I'm surprised you are not skeptical about global warming science. I couldn't resist.

120% of the people used to think the Earth was flat...

Skeptic,

Gasbags hire other gasbags to create polls so they can cite them as faux evidence in their faux arguments to make faux conclusions ... it is all very neat.

59% of repuibs 35% of liberals 26% are skeptical of any answer.........

Observer, The Earth is flat where you are standing and as far as the eye can see.

It is obvious that Rasmussen polls are not polls at all. They are the imaginings of those that want the poll to say what they want to prove. Irregardless of the facts. Oh! I just spotted the little Fox icon, that explains it all.

"Most Americans (52%) believe that there continues to be significant disagreement within the scientific community over global warming." No, they don't." Did you take this out of context? The majority of Americans have a problem with the assumption that global warming is totally man caused. Global warming may be here, so far we haven't seen a big jump in temperature that should have been evident in the last few years mainly caused by a substantial increase in Carbon Dioxide that China and India have allowed into the atmosphere.

"Gasbags hire other gasbags to create polls so they can cite them as faux evidence" Yes, Jack this has become what is referred to as "peer" review. Find another "scientist" that agrees with you has become the new acceptable method. When ever you have over 100% of anything, I'm skeptical!

ChuxxR, any poll I disagree with is wrong, do you agree?

Rasmussen Poll 12/03/09: "Most Americans (52%) believe that there continues to be significant disagreement within the scientific community over global warming.

While many advocates of aggressive policy responses to global warming say a consensus exists, the latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that just 25% of adults think most scientists agree on the topic. Twenty-three percent (23%) are not sure. This is a direct copy and paste.

fourgen - If that's an accurate reflection of reality (and I sincerely doubt that it is), then 52 percent of Americans are wrong. But the problem is, I think, with Rasmussen's sampling methods.

Rasmussen said 53% of those polled oppose Congressional Health Care Reform. Sounds pretty convincing, right? So how many people were polled? Were all the respondents Republicans, as was the case in another poll?

This is their own disclaimer on the climate change poll: "This national telephone survey of 1,000 Likely Voters was conducted by Rasmussen Reports on July 20-21, 2009. The margin of sampling error for the survey is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence."

I did a poll about how many Americans have ever eaten a live kitten. I called four inmates at Pelican Bay. Two respondents said yes and two said no. So according to my poll, 50% of all respondents admit that they ate a live kitten in their lifetime. There's your profile of America.

Did you know Scott Rasmussen was a paid consultant for George W. Bush?
