The Renaissance and Wheaties
A recent article I read in the Sacramento Bee stated that Wheaties (a brand of cereal) is going to put past Olympic winners on their boxes. The Renaissance brought back the past as well. The Renaissance revived ancient Rome and Greece. Greece invented the Olympics (to praise their gods) and made heroes of the champions who excelled in the various sports. Today’s modern Olympics are patterned after those ancient Greek games. As the Renaissance was the rebirth and a renewed appreciation of ancient cultures this current effort by General Mills to feature past Olympic champions on the boxes of Wheaties, “Breakfast of Champions” is recognition of past efforts by the men and women who were champions in past Olympic Games. Without the Renaissance there would not have been any interest in the classical time period, which would mean no Olympics. That signifies that if it were not for the Renaissance Wheaties would not have the past Olympic Champions on their cereal boxes, because no one would have known or cared about finding it. The new boxes with old champions will be sold nationwide, and they will spread just like the Renaissance did.
