LOCAL ROTARY CLUB HELPS VISION VOLUNTEERS
A VISION OF SERVICE: ROTARY CLUB STEPS UP TO HELP WITH EYE SURGERIES IN INDIA
October 29, 2008
The Rocklin/Loomis Basin Rotary Club saw clearly when it came to helping with hundreds of eye surgeries in rural India. The club will team with the Unite for Sight organization and Del Oro grad (2003) Ali Sambucetti to help deliver health care in parts of India with little or no access to optical care.
Unite for Sight is a volunteer organization of surgeons and health care workers who perform eye surgeries in rural and poor areas of the world. In India, the group of surgeons and support workers will be performing hundreds of cataract and other eye surgeries.
Ali, a UC, Berkeley graduate in health sciences, will be helping with the work in three areas of India: near Patna, near Chennai (in which an Indian Rotary club--the Rotary Club of Madras is involved) from December 18 to February 20, 2009. She will be at the Kalinga Eye Hospital in Dhenkanal (in the State of Orissa) for a month in February and possibly longer.
She will assist the clinics with screening for eye disease in surrounding areas, education programs in local schools, and coordinating sight-restoring surgeries. When Ali committed to volunteering for the work, she approached the Rotary club for help. In the spirit of service where and when it is needed, the club, through Loomis Resident John Nitta and club president Ed Krumwiede of Rocklin, stepped up to help Ali with air fare and Unite for Sight with a cash donation to help them in their work. Ali will be keeping in touch with the local club by email while she is in India and also plans to visit Indian Rotary clubs to inform them about Unite for Sight’s work in their country.
“The Lion’s clubs have traditionally been leaders in providing eye care services throughout the world,” said President Krumwiede. “But, when we saw a need and an opportunity here to help a local student and UC graduate, our Rotary club stepped in to help. We were impressed by Ali’s volunteer spirit and we look forward to hearing from herabout her adventure in service in India.”
