Proposition 8. Did God make a mistake?
In 2000 the voters in California banned same sex marriage by an overwhelming majority. Four activist judges legislating from the bench overturned the people’s mandate. Proposition 8 was supposed to reestablish the democratic process of majority rule in the matter. I was considering voting for it; however, listening to the vocal religious zealous supporting Prop 8 has caused me to look a little deeper.
I was raised as a Catholic. I went to a Catholic school through high school and attended Pepperdine University, a Christian (Church of Christ affiliated) college. At age fifteen I also attended a junior seminary, so, I have more then just a passing familiarity of Catholicism and Christianity.
Jesus Christ thought tolerance and acceptance of everyone. According to the Bible we are all created equal in the eyes of God. The Bible also teaches that God created man in his own image and likeness. Science has established that homosexuality is NOT a life choice but genetic. So, did God make a mistake? Is Proposition 8 an attempt to correct that mistake?
One of the most profound expressions of love are marriage vows spoken in front of God, friends, family and witnesses. Is it really up to us mere mortals to legislate what is an acceptable form of love and marriage and restrict it only to be between a man and a woman? If two people are devoted to each other and wish to form a committed union is it up to us to legislate their happiness?

Nice post. I'm part of a straight couple who has been together thirteen years, plans on having children soon, and plans on being together the rest of our lives. What we do not plan to do is get married, or at least not until gay couples can marry everywhere in the country. I would rather not sound high-and-mighty or holier-than-thou, but as recently as forty-one years ago there were fourteen states in which it was illegal for a black person to marry a white person, and I believe that in forty more years it will seem just as incredible and appalling that at one time the law prohibited gay people from marrying one another. I am hoping that voters in California will get on the right side of history.
Thank you! I also am straight and have been married for 35 years to a wonderful man. Our fabulous daughter was valedictorian of both 8th grade and high school. She ran cross-country and track, played soccer, Little League softball, and other sports with both males and females. She played Ultimate Frisbee in college. She has long-time friends, both male and female and both hetero- and homosexual. She is working, right now, on defeating Prop 8. And, yes, she is dating another female. I am very proud of her and love her with all my heart. Her happiness is more important than anything.
Joemiko, Thank you for your thoughtful post, I agree wholeheartedly with your statement.
Jesus said "Go and sin no more".
He did not tell the adulteress to "do what feels good for you".
R_T, some don't believe this to be a sin.
And, there are plenty adulterers who are spouting the Jesus line. I recognize their names. For some reason they don't think they have sinned. Or, do they just believe that Jesus died for their sins so it is okay for themselves. A case of NIMBY - I got mine, too bad for you.
Back in 2000 when the HIV issues were fresh in our minds we learned the following:
1). Gay males were a high risk health group per CDC due to their sexual activities and practices.
2). Gay males perpetuated the spread of HIV amongst themselves and introduced it into the heterosexual population too.
3). The money committed back then was large and growing for a cure to HIV/AIDS. Today it is enormous--It has cost and still costs hundred's of billions of dollars.
4). The cost in lives amongst the homosexual and heterosexual populations as well as pure dollars has told a story. Gay male's sexual activity is very costly.
So, does this jog your memory a little? Does this history and the fact that gay males are a health risk even today-- rock your world? Billions are spent for medical research and development and we are not yet out of the woods helathwise or monetarily. If prop 8 goes down in defeat then educational teaching will be propigated to children of all ages as it is in MA. Confused children will join the ranks of the Gay population who might otherwise not. Gay ranks will grow along with the sexual lifestyle. When the next male-to-male spread disease rears it's deadly head it will be introduced into the heterosexual population as was with HIV/AIDS . Again, people in both popilations will die and the anger aimed at the transmission source will not be abated by political correctness. don't kid yourself! The dollars spent on another battle for a cure will be hefty too.
The high health risk factors illegitimize the lifestyle. It is a scientific fact. Therefore, how can this lifestyle be called legitimate enough to be put on a grounding equal to a healthy lifestyle that traditional marriage has nutured for thousands of years. Science props up the lifestyle with the pressures of political correctness behind it. Our societal denial of the great financial burden of this menace is irresponsible and not adultlike. There is no true safe sex. Abstainance is the only safe remedy and it is unpopular.
When prop 8 supporters fear their childrens weaknesses combined with the false legitimzing of same sex marriage creates a window of opportunity for death, disease and great sorrow don't dismiss out of hand their fears. Not to mention the clash of religious principles that have existed for thousands of years. There will be legal challenges in the courts for years to come. This is bad law. This is law that flies in the face of scientific fact. And for 2-3% of the states population. It isn't prejudice, it isn't a lack of love or respect. Science and if you belive in god says it just doesn't work. The lifestyle just doesn't work! Too much death, threat of more death, financially prohibative. It literally shouts at us if we haven't been blinded or are in historic denial!
Ok, I've changed my mind, You should VOTE NO ON PROP8....
Nope to 8
Love the gays...Vote No to Prop 8...Stop the hate
I love California and want everyone to have the same rights...No on 8
Its me, Rational_Thynker, Telling you all that I want you to Vote No On Prop 8, its good for the soul!!!
Nope.
It's not Almighty God the Creator that make mistake, it us human.
Do we want inner peace?
All man are created equal and sinless, but we fail to follow the guidance of Almighty God our Creator.
"If a man lies with a male as with a women, both of them shall be put to death for their abominable deed; they have forfeited their lives." (Leviticus 20:13 NAB)
Again, support of Prop 8 is almost to a person (rat_stink, you don't qualify) is based on faith. Gee, who else makes political decisions driven by their interpretation of scripture? The first two that come to mind are the Taliban and al-Qaeda...
